Kyoto

The bad news or Erica's first day in Japan was that it poured with rain all day long. I am so glad I bought a brolly, I was nowhere near as wet as the other day. On the plus side we had a great day exploring bits of Eastern Kyoto, particularly around the Geisha district of Gion. In the street where the really posh Geisha places are in the film Memoirs of a Geisha we even saw a Geisha entertaining a businessman-type, we were right thrilled. Lots of women in kimonos too, though I assume these are not Geisha.

We saw a lot of temples, but the best by far was the World Heritage Kiyomizudera Temple complex, particularly this massive wooden temple built on a hillside amongst the forest overlooking Kyoto, like the biggest verandah ever. And also very lovely was Kodaiji Temple, lots of zen beauty. Nara tomorrow!
