Wanderings and Side Trips travel blog

Today, we got up early and hit the road for home. Shan Stewart, who farms for us and takes care of the animals and the farm while we are away, will be heading down to the Brownsville, TX area where his oldest son is getting married. We have made arrangements to be home to take care of things in his absence so that his whole family can attend the wedding.

I had expected more of the high desert type environment on our drive to Window Rock and Gallup, NM. What a surprise! It was more like the mountains - lots of pine trees and hills. After Gonado, the road became a really nice four lane divided highway and we made good time. We had planned to spend the night in a "free" campground in Tucumcari this night, so we covered a lot of miles. We had chosen this campground from the Free Campground website because it had a good review and was only $8.00 per night for full hookups. Well, we almost passed it by, but we would have had to boondock and we had not prepared for that. We had very little water and our batteries were not charged up. And we would have needed both since we were back in cold temps. The hookups were good even if the area and the campground itself was less than desirable. We just closed all the shades and turned in early. It was a pretty sleepless night with the trains running every hour and the car and truck traffic. It sounded like it all was coming right through our living room!

We got up early on Sunday morning and headed on home - just 6 hours away. Once we make up our mind to go home, we put on some miles and make good time. The weather and roads were excellent, just cold. Our RV knows the way home, so I don't have to do much navigating. However, I have not been getting much drive time in, so we decided I should start doing more of that. Wes is determined that I should learn EVERYTHING about the truck and trailer, so if something should happen to him, I could at least get home. But he thinks I should continue RVing even if he is not with me. I doubt that would happen. Anyway, I drove the last 3 or 4 hours. We made a stop in Johnson City, KS to visit his Mom who is in an LTC center there. We arrived home about 3pm - one day earlier than planned. Everything was in good shape and Sophie was excited to see us! A good trip!
