Wanderings and Side Trips travel blog

Diane and I had visited the Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center yesterday and picked up a lot of free information. As I was reading through one of the newspapers, I noticed an article about the Naval Station's Annual Christmas Lights Open House. It was last night, so Wes and I decided to go. You can certainly tell we are not military. We entered at the wrong gate, but they gave us a temporary pass and directed us to the parking area. Then the MP stopped us because we didn't stop when they were playing taps and lowering the flag. Since we were inside the truck, we didn't hear the music. When we finally got to the entrance gate for the pier, I didn't have my picture ID, but I DID have my camera. I couldn't bring my camera in, but they did let me in without an ID. I have decided any innocent looking, confused, grandmotherly type could probably get on base without much trouble. Anyway, after all that, it was a great evening! The ships/boats were all decorated with lights and trees and Santas. Each ship had cookies and drinks and some even had their own chorus singing Christmas carols. We were not allowed on board, but it was fun and interesting to see everything there. I was struck by just how young the sailors looked. Most of them are just a few years older than our grandson. It was also particularily interesting to me because both my parents were in the Navy during WW II.

We are really glad we made the effort to attend this event.

PS: obviously there are no photographs to show because of security reasons.
