Tom & Charlene's Excellent Adventures travel blog

Thursday, July 17

Awoke this morning to gray skies and cool temps – another jeans & jacket day. Found that a Class C with Ohio plates pulled in beside us after we fell asleep. Talked to the daughter of the family. The mother is a diplomat and they live in Abuhdabi(sp?). The RV belongs to her sister who live around Cleveland.

The centerpiece of the Delta Junction Historical Park is Rika’s Roadhouse. It was an important stop on the trail and Tanana River in the early 1900s. Rika’s was a restaurant, hotel and meeting place for the area. She was way ahead of the time and a hard worker. She had a huge truck garden so she always had fresh vegetables for the restaurant and to sell. She also raised cows, sheep, goats & chickens. Rika ran the post office and also sold liquor – quite an entrepreneur for a woman of her day.

Next Stop was North Pole, AK. A town dedicated to keeping the Christmas spirit alive year round. Of course we had to stop and get a new ornament.

Our first stop in Fairbanks was at Pioneer Park. This is a town park dedicated to the spirit of Fairbanks early settlers. Many historical building have been moved to the park and restored. There is a very good museum on the grounds – all free.

Ate at the Salmon Bake on the park grounds. This is an all you can eat buffet. Hit it just right – tonight was crab legs night. Won’t tell you how many servings we had but we did not leave hungry – of course we had to work for the crab meat but it was worth it (with drawn butter!!). I also tried the prime rib and Tom had the grilled salmon with honey glaze. Included was a very good salad bar, a dessert bar and drinks. We picked a good time to get there. As we were about finished the bus arrived – no place left to sit by that time.

We again have 4G phone service!! The hotspot works too – life is good! Caught up on email, FB and the journal.

I guess you can officially call us the people of Walmart. We are gathered with about 30 other campers spending the night at the Fairbanks Walmart. Sunset is 11:53 PM - Nighty-night!
