Mission Socorro, 1680 - present

Presidio Chapel San Elizario, 1789 - present

We drove along Socorro Road and visited the three churches. All three are owned by the Catholic Church, and are in use for parish acivities. In fact, the manager of the repair shop where we are lodging, goes to church at Mission Socorro. His son will be confirmed there this year! The floors are made of carved stone, the pews don't match, and the beams in the ceiling have carvings in them, all obviously done by hand. Replacement beams have a date carved to show they are not original. All in all, a step into the past and a peek into the Texan culture.
