Dry camping at Amistad NRA

The Pecos River

Amistad Lake from the bridge

We drove 337 miles today and stopped at the Amistad National Recreation Area just west of Del Rio, Texas. This is a work in progress right on the US/Mexico border. As a matter of fact, the border runs right through the middle of the lake in some places. There were posted signs about needing a Mexican boat and fishing license in some areas. It is a huge lake, about 800 miles of shoreline. The Pecos and Rio Grande Rivers empty into it. Lots of water. There are 4 or 5 campgrounds. We stayed at the San Pedro. They are nice campgrounds, but there are no services. Campground toilets and covered tables are about it. I understand they will be upgrading the area in the near future. However, right now, the price is right - $2.00 with Wes' new Golden Age card. It was warm enough here that we didn't need the heat overnight.

Del Rio is a nightmare to drive through and we could not find a truck stop anywhere. Finally, at the north end of town, there was regular fuel station with a tall enough canopy we could get under. So we fueled up. We really like traveling the "red roads" instead of the interstates, but with our small gas tank and low mileage, we sometimes have a difficult time finding fuel when we need it.

Enjoyed the beautiful sunset and got a good nights rest. Will travel on west tomorrow.
