|We drove through Death Valley on the way between Las Vegas and Yosemite. I pretty much hate deserts, but it's another classic American landmark and another national park to check off my list. It's always fun to go below sea level and has some other nice features like salt flats and sand dunes. It also has an eerie deserted feeling to it - makes you sympathize with the pioneers who got lost there on their journey to the west. It was named for an expedition that got stranded there for a while until they found their way out of the valley - but surprisingly only one person died. I would have expected more fatalities given the harsh conditions -- it was well over 100 degrees the day we were there.
