Blanton Museum - Synchromy in Purple Minor, 1918 - Stanton Macdonald-Wright

This morning I met Virginia at her church to carpool to the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas with her and three of her friends, Vera Eckardt, Inge Rider and Lucille McBriarty. We attended a Bach cantata conducted by Joseph E. Bolin.

The Bach Cantata Project is a joint venture of The Butler School of Music and The Blanton Museum of Art and sponsored in part by Classical 89.5 KMFA. Concerts are held the last Tuesday of every month, September through April (excluding December). They pair performances by students and faculty from the Butler School of Music with a featured piece of art from The Blanton galleries. After each performance, a museum guide hosts a special viewing of the featured work of art, providing background on the piece and highlighting its connection to the cantata.

Today’s cantata was “Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit, BWV 111” (Whatever my God wills, may that happen always) which Johann Sebastian Bach composed for the third Sunday following Epiphany (January 21, 1725). The featured work of art was Stanton Macdonald-Wright’s 1918 oil on canvas, “Snychromy in Purple Minor.” The artist assigned colors to the notes of the musical scale – thus, the made-up word, snychromy. This painting was inspired by the “Pieta”.

I decided to become a member of the museum. This entitles me to free museum admission, discounts for classes and special events, 10% discount at the museum gift shop, free subscription to their magazine, “Articulate”, discounted tickets to Art City Austin and reciprocal membership privileges at university museums nationwide. (

Afterwards we had lunch at the Blanton Café. In the gift shop a box of ladybug note cards called out to me. :>)

This was a very nice outing and I’m looking forward to the next one.
