We arrived in Flamingo in the afternoon on Jan. 16, Martin Luthor King day. The campground has 40 sites which have electricity. The electric sites are first come, first served. We were able to get the last electric site! We got set up and relaxed the first night.

The second day we spent exploring around Flamingo. There are several ponds where birds gather as well as a marina. We spent some time at Mrazek Pond which had many different wading birds, including a Roseatte Spoonbill. We had lunch at Nine Mile Pond with an alligator on the bank near the picnic table. On the way back we stopped at the marina where we saw 3 crocodiles! The crocodiles have pointed snouts instead of the rounded ones that the alligators have. We saw another Roseatte Spoonbill at Eco Pond before returning to our campsite.

The Flamingo area was devastated by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. The Flamingo Lodge was destroyed by the hurricane and had to be completely torn down. They still haven't rebuilt it. The campgrounds have been improved and everything else is up and running.
