The Opera House

The huge Harbour Bridge

We got our first views of Sydney and its many sights today all be it under a cloudy sky. We checked in at another YHA this time a really modern one where we get to stay in a dorm within a converted railway carriage.

We took our first walk down George Street the main artery of Sydney along which are hundreds of shops, bars, restaurants and everything in between. It reminded us of Oxford Street but was a little bit warmer.

At the end of this seemingly never ending road we arrived at Circular Quay for our first views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. The two icons were even more impressive than we imagined although the Opera House doesn't seem as white as we thought.

Next we took a short walk up to The Rocks the oldest part of Sydney and a nice change from the modern skyline in the background. We trawled through a market before walking around the old buildings and down small alleyways. Many people wanted this area of Sydney to be demolished and replaced with more high rise, but fortunately there was enough opposition to this proposal and the attractive Rocks remain.

We have already fallen for Sydney's charm and we definetly agree that it is one of the worlds most beautiful and alluring cities.
