We're taking a year off to travel! travel blog

The weather was perfect to visit the monument today. And we got lucky with light traffic also. I was surprised to be charged for parking, but then we were not charged an entry fee, so that evened out. Our first view of the monument was as we were driving in. Impressive from that distance but even more so as we walked at the base. Half of the Presidential Trail was closed due to construction but what we saw was well worth it. The approach was lined with all the individual state flags, along with date of entry into the union.

In 1925 federal and state legislatures authorized the carving of the memorial in the Black Hills of SD. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was chosen to oversee the project. Carving began in 1927 and was completed in 1941. To appeal to a national audience, US presidents were chosen. Around 400 laborers worked on the memorial. There were no deaths and few injuries. About 450,000 tons of rock were blasted from the mountain. The original cost of the carving was$989,992.32.
