Gate At The Center Of Kunming City

THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 2006. KUNMING, CHINA. Kunming is another big Chinese city. However, it seems a little more relaxed than your typical Chinese city, perhaps because of its elevation of 2000 meters. For me, Kunming is just a transit point as I'm planning to catch an overnight bus tomorrow night to Jinghong and make my way to the Lao border (via Mengla). All my research indicates I can get a Lao visa at the border with two photos and US$30.

This afternoon, I ran into Robert and Merline, the Dutch couple, on the street near my hostel. They arrived in Kunming yesterday and did a bicycle ride today. In the evening, I ran into the Belgium women, Stephanie and Caroline, while I was looking for a place to eat dinner. We all went to dinner; Caroline and I sampled the famous Across the Bridge Yunnan noodles (raw meats and vegetables added to a steaming soup). Stephanie and Caroline head to Vietnam tomorrow. We may meet again later at Koh Phan Ngan, one of the islands in southern Thailand.
