It was a long 320 miles from Carson City to Ely, NV (that's pronounced eely). There were only three small towns in that 320 miles - Fallon, Austin and Eureka. It was a very good highway and an easy drive, crossing several different mountain range not withstanding. It was across the valley, cross the mountains, then repeat six or seven times. We took US 50 all the way across and it parallels the old Pony Express trail so we found that interesting - all that work for the pony express and it only lasted two years before the trains took over.

We are staying at the Valley View RV Park which is a very nice park with large pull-throughs for us transients. We have a large 50 amp, full hookup site with good Verizon and a clear shot to the satellite.

Thursday, we made a trip to the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park about 22 miles south of Ely. That involved about seven miles of good gravel road as well. The ovens were so well made they are still in very good shape with very little decomposition. These are huge ovens that hold 35 cords of wood each and turn it into 50 bushels of charcoal in 12-13 days. The charcoal was used in nearby mine smelters.

Tomorrow we head to Delta, UT for another football weekend and maybe a little bit of touristy stuff.
