Another fishing day for the guys and JoElla and I were off to the Rockport-Fulton area for sightseeing. The Fulton Mansion was the first stop. As we waited for the tour to begin, we strolled around the gardens. There is a good sized collection of plants and flowers and a few were in bloom. In another couple of weeks, I imagine it will be bursting with color, but today it was mostly green. Our tour included rooms on the first and second floors of the mansion. I am really grateful to my Mom for taking me all these places about 15 - 20 years ago. When I last visited the mansion, we were able to see all the floors and the tower room as well as the basement. The family who owned this mansion were very innovative for their time and they had indoor plumbing, steam heat, and other modern conveniences that other homes in Texas did not have in their time period.
Then we headed on north to Lamar, TX where the Big Tree is located. This tree is over 1000 years old. You can see more photos and information on a previous post. From here we drove on down along the coast and stopped and watched birds and ducks. When we headed back to town we stopped at the Copano Bay Fishing Pier. This Pier used to be the main 2 lane highway over the Bay, but a newer, taller bridge/highway was built, so the old highway became a fishing pier. Most of these fishermen were not having very good luck either.
Next, we toured the Western Horizons RV park just south of the bridge. Lots of spaces and a couple of little ponds. This is a BIG park.
About 2pm, we decided we needed lunch, so we had another Whataburger. We headed back toward Rockport and stopped at the Texas Maritime Museum, which we had missed this morning. It is a nice little museum and has lots of information regarding fishing, shrimping, crabbing, boats, and an exhibit of the le Belle, one of La Salle's ships that sank off Matagorda Island.
A check with the guys and they had caught two "keepers" and rescued another stranded fisherman.
