Most of the winter Texans in the Gas Lite Village where we were parked planned to leave this week, so that called for a celebration (of sorts). 17 of us gathered at the Big Fisherman for a farewell dinner Sunday evening. We ate lots of good food and visited for a while. We got better acquainted with some and reacquainted with others. We have had a great time this year and have met a lot of really nice, friendly people in this park. We are looking forward to continuing those friendships next winter. We have already made our reservations for December and March.
We have decided on a new criteria for our departure schedule. It is about 1 hour after whatever time we decide to leave. That seems to be what usually happens. No matter how well prepared we are, we always seem to be about 1 hour behind time when we leave. So, Monday morning we left at 9:45. We had planned to be on the road at 9am. Not too bad, I guess. We decided to head up I-37 and then cut over to New Braunfels and travel across country to avoid the heavy traffic in San Antonio. When we got there, the traffic on Anderson Loop wasn't bad, so we just continued on around to highway 281 and headed north to Johnson City. I guess I should say we tried to head north. The traffic on highway 281 was bad and it was only 2pm. We finally broke out of the traffic and had a very nice trip through the hill country to Johnson City, then on over to Fredericksburg.
My body is so happy! I could tell exactly when we hit that defining line between high and lower humidity, between warm, sticky air and the cooler, dry air. It was at Brushy Top just south of Blanco. Ahhhhhhhhh - relief!
We stopped at the visitors center in Johnson City and picked up some maps and info on where to find wild flowers as well as some other sights we might like to see. After reading over all of it, we realized we need to stay here two weeks to see it all. We found our RV park and checked in and got all set up in record time. We were both really tired. We are staying at the Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park 3 miles south of town on highway 16. This is a great complex. The fairgrounds, the golf course, the baseball fields, the small airport, the tennis courts are all here in this area. It is a beautiful place - well landscaped and layed out. There is plenty of room for all the different areas without disturbing any of the neighbors. There are three different RV areas. We are right next to the air strip, but there are maybe two or three planes a day - and I haven't heard any at night. Not noisy at all. There are full hookups, showers, rest rooms, picnic tables and pecan trees. Spaces are roomy. All this for $20/night compared to $25 to $35 per night at other RV parks. We really like this place and will return here whenever we come back to Fredericksburg.
Today, we drove on the back roads to New Braunfels. The back roads were supposed to have wild flowers, but we didn't see any. In New Braunfels we visited an RV dealer Wes found on the internet. Very nice place with good employees. We hope they have the MH we want when we are ready to buy because we would like to do business with them.
After the RV dealer, we had a late lunch and headed back to Fredericksburg on some different back roads. Finally, in the last few miles, we came across a field of white flowers and a road ditch with Blue Bonnetts. I took some photos, but it was so late in the day, there was not much sun left.
We arrived home to find messages from Bill and Helen, friends from the Class of 05, who are also here in Fredericksburg. We will meet them tomorrow morning at the Wildseed Market. I WILL have photos of wildflowers even if they are grown in a nursery setting!
It is cool here - in the 60s and colder tonight. We may need the electric blanket again! YEAH!!!
