Happy Birthday, Mum!

TUESDAY, JULY 4, 2006. SHANGHAI TO HANGZHOU, CHINA. My parents arrived yesterday to Shanghai after the end to an exhausting two week Silk Road tour. Today we catch a bus to Hangzhou, about two and a half hours southwest of Shanghai, famous for its lake.

Happy 230th Birthday America! (Fourth of July)

WEDNESDAY, JULY 5, 2006. HANGZHOU, CHINA. My parents and I spent most of the day indoors as it was raining heavily. We visited the highly recommended China National Silk Museum, with its comprehensive displays on the history and manufacturing of silk (In English in addition to Chinese). We had a late lunch at a restaurant overlooking the lake, before heading back to our hotel for a rest. In the evening, we celebrated my mom's 66th birthday at the Xi Hu Spring Restaurant, across the street from our hotel. One of the benefits of travelling with my parents in China is that, with them in tow, I can sample all the great Chinese cuisine. As Chinese food is meant to be eaten by families/group, it's difficult to eat solo.

Tomorrow, we catch a bus to Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountain) to see the sunrise from the top of this mountain.

By the way, a travel article by Taylor Holliday about sailing the Turkish coast was published in this past Sunday's New York Times. Taylor sailed with Cengiz (our mutual captain) the week before my sail last July 2005. I had a drink with Taylor, Carla, and Oytun (the all women crew) after the end of their sail. Check out the article by cutting and pasting the following link:

Photos from my sail last year can be seen at post number three (3), dated July 10, 2005.
