The weather cleared enough last Monday, April 9, that we packed up and headed out. We traveled north to Brady, Abilene, Lubbock and Amarillo. The Bluebonnets were good all the way to Lubbock. There was drizzle and sprinkles and it was overcast, but no serious weather. Finally, just north of Amarillo, the sun peaked out and we began to see blue skies. We drove on to Dumas and boondocked at WalMart for the night. We were up early Tuesday and headed on north to Elkhart, Kansas and then made a stop at Johnson City to visit Wes' Mom, who is in the LTC Center there. In another hour and a half, we were home.
Everything looked great! The roads were dry. The wheat looks very good, the cattle are a little ragged looking, but alive. After the long, severe winter this area has had, it is amazing that anyone has survived. As we approached the farm from the west, it looked good too. As we got closer, we could see lots of broken and downed trees and large branches. After inspection, that was all the damage we could see. Everything inside the house was fine - no water in the basement, no "critters" had moved in. Our dog, Sophie, looks great! And she remembered us! She is so happy we are home, and we are so happy to see her, too.
It has been cold the past few days, so there is no need to mow yet. And we arrived home just in time for the next snow storm. Blizzard conditions with an accumulation of 7 - 8 inches are predicted for tonight. We took Sophie to the vet for her annual check up and shots this morning and it is already starting to rain. Wes has winterized the fifth wheel again and we are snuggling in for a couple of days.
We have enjoyed this last trip so much that we are looking forward to more and longer trips in the near future. We have some family obligations this summer and our summer job in June/July and then we will be ready to hit the road again.
As soon as the weather warms up, we will be painting the house, garage and other farm buildings. Obviously we will be cutting and stacking firewood. We are also "slimming down" - getting rid of all the "stuff" we have. We still have not unpacked boxes from our move two years ago. We obviously don't need what is in those boxes, do we?
Keep in touch. Come on by and see us if you are in the area.
