Tonight my church hosted “Concert for a Cause” to benefit Korean orphans. Daniel Suh, a senior at Lake Travis High School, conceived and organized the concert. He was touched by the stories of hardship and suffering by Korean refugees when he visited their church in Los Angeles a few years ago. He wanted to raise money to help them. Since he is an accomplished musician (he plays viola in our orchestra), he thought that this could be done by having a concert and collecting donations.
With the help of his mother (who is our pianist) and Dr. Mary Ellen Johnson (our director of traditional music and fine arts) he was able to get 37 classical musicians and singers to volunteer their time for the concert!! Most of them are Korean, I believe. Many of them are students at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas. In addition, the Lake Travis High School Fiddler Ensemble of about a dozen musicians participated. It was a wonderful program. I hope they raised a large amount.
Today the annual Kite Festival was held in Zilker Park, which is just down the street from Pecan Grove RV Park. Because the streets in our neighborhood were choked with traffic, pedicabs and pedestrians, it was a real trip just getting in and out. It took me an hour and 15 minutes just to go around to the street behind the RV park and so I could turn right onto Lamar. This made me very late for the concert at church. I missed the first video and the first two pieces. I was not pleased!
