|Today was definitely the low point of our travels. Lisa and I had decided to take a taxi into Athens to explore on our own. We had been warned the drivers could be shady and ours did not disappoint. The price he quoted seemed high but he claimed it was a set price. We couldn’t be sure because someone had taped over the rate chart. When we handed him the 25 euros at the end he pulled a sleight of hand trick and insisted we had given him two 5’s instead of a 20 and a 5. We refused to give him anymore and wandered in the other direction. We found a street in the Plaka that was full of religious goods suppliers and figured we’d be safe there. We strolled through a flea market and up to the pottery museum. Given our luck it was not surprisingly closed. We walked around the steaming hot acropolis before trying our luck with another taxi. This time our driver was a sweet little old man. He spoke no English but called his boss to translate. Best of all he only charged us 18 euro!
