We made a short trip to Seattle to see our son Jesse for his birthday (which is Halloween). We joined up with Justin Baker, and we all went for a day trip out to Whidbey Island and Deception Pass. It is a beautiful area and one of Jesse’s favorite places up there. We walked across the Deception Pass bridge and saw some kayakers learning how to paddle in the currents. The pass is so narrow there that during tide changes there can be standing waves and whirlpools. Navigating through the strait and into the shallow waters beyond of Skagit Bay is what led to the name Deception Pass. Original navigators thought it was a creek or small river, not the northern part of the island.

Jesse led us on a hike to a geocache. I was embarrassed to be huffing and puffing so much. I really need to get in better shape. This lazy winter is not good for us! But walking slower allows me to see the small mushrooms that grow off the trail, or the slugs in the leaves. It was a lovely hike though through old growth forests. Combine that with the beauty of the rugged coastline and you can see why the west coast is so spectacular. A nice ride on the Washington State Ferry to Mukilteo completed the outing. I had to wonder if it was Jesse’s birthday weekend or mine since I enjoyed it so much!’
