Leaving Nacogdoches, we traveled to the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site on highway 21 near Alto. More than 1,200 years ago, a group of Caddos known as the Hasinai built a village and ceremonial center on the prairie overlooking the Neches River. It was the southwestern-most ceremonial center for the Mound Builders, a culture which endured for more than 2,500 years. Three earthen mounds still exist here. I walked the entire trail to see the mounds up close.
