We're taking a year off to travel! travel blog

Today we went back to the park. After a stop at the visitor center to talk with the rangers and to watch the movie, we were on our way on the loop drive. First stop was the North Crater Flow. It is a 0.3 mile trail which crosses one of the youngest flows in the park. On the trail are monoliths and crater fragments which rafted here by the lava flows. For our first glimpse of the park, it was awesome! It overlooked the RV park. We drove through it and discovered that we could have fit in a very few of the sites. In the distance is the Lost Mountains range.

Our next stop was Devils Orchard, with island-like lava fragments standing in a sea of cinders. There were also trees, both living and dead. And flowers. Which gave this area a very surreal feel.

Our next stop was going to be the Inferno Cone. Unfortunately the clouds thickened and it began to sprinkle. We decided it would be a good time to have lunch while we waited out the rain. As we ate, the rain began in earnest, so we headed back to Honeys. We joined our neighbors, Larry and Debby, at their place for happy hour today.
