Today we need to get back to Calgary. We'll have to fill up with gas somewhere, and I don't think we can make Alberta with the gas on board. So we'll likely have to fill in Golden. As luck would have it, it began to rain around 8am. Tucker got a walk before the rain, but Cassie was still sleepy. We're anxious to get the days driving underway since this might be the longest drive of the vacation. We got packed up and would have been out of the campground by our scheduled 9am departure had we not spoken to the guy next door. He's from Ottawa and recently retired, and has driven his 5er from Ottawa south to Indiana, west to San Diego and then north to Vancouver. He's now bound for Edmonton via Jasper (not sure why he didn't use the Yellowhead) and then back home. Only mechanical problem in that time was a fuel pump in his Dodge truck.
Got gas in Golden (minimum amount since it's $1.20/litre!!). The new Yoho bridge and approaches are now done and they're working on a new road and bridge higher up the Kicking Horse canyon. It must be 300 feet high! Very impressive. I'll bet we see it as a backdrop to a movie in a few years. It reminds me of the bridge they're building near Hoover Dam.
We decided to stop in Lake Louise and grab a bite to eat. No luck ...there's scenery in LL, but no food except for one restaurant and it was packed. Besides, we were in too much of a hurry for a restaurant and were looking for fast food of some sort. Decided to granola bar lunch and stop in Canmore. Canmore was another test since they are NOT big rig friendly. Lots of restaurants, but not one that had a parking lot that you could get into and out of. There was no parking on the road close to the highway and other roads had signs saying no bus parking. We assumed that meant us too. We wasted 15 minutes looking for parking, then drove back to the highway and on to Calgary.
Arrived without further incident at around 4:30 in the afternoon. Ordered pizza immediately and began the unpacking/washing chores. All in all, a good trip, with too much rain, but at least it rained at night or when we were driving for the most part. In 23 days, we covered almost 2,700 kilometers in the motor home and a further 400-500 kilometers in the Saturn.
Time for a sleep and then start planning the next trip in September.
