Port Douglas is about 1hr north of Cairns and is a beach town with easy access out to the great barrier reef.
We arrived at Cairns airport and got a transfer up to Port Douglas. We arrived just after midnight only to be told that our reservation had been lost ! Luckily they found us a room and said that they would sort everything out the next day.
After sorting out our room, we had a look around town to familiarise ourselves.
During our time in Port Douglas we visited the beach alot to try and get as good a tan as possible ! The beach was lovely and the water was warm most days (about 26 degrees). The jellyfish season hadnt quite started so there were no problems going for a dip in the sea !
We spent time looking around Port Douglas, it is a nice small town with some good shops and restaurants.
We took a trip out to the great barrier reef. We stopped at three different spots on the Agincourt reef (outer barrier reef) and Monica went diving at the first two sites while Nick snorkelled. The coral is amazing with loads of different colours, however there were not too many fish around. We saw a couple of reef sharks and some bigger fish, like the unicorn fish but they were not in abundance. We had lunch on the boat which was very tasty ! and the weather was beautiful for sunbathing on the top of the boat. At the last site we were snorkelling when Monica suddenly felt she was being stung. We got out of the water and she have been stung all down the leg and down the arm. The guy on the boat said it was probably from jellyfish spawn.
We took a trip to Mossman gorge. This is a jungle area where there is a nice walk through the forest (without mosquitos !) We then stopped at a gorge pool where we took a dip and swam around in the cool water.
While we were there we had a couple of full on thunder storms. However it did not stop us having a lovely meal at one of the best restaurants in Port Douglas. It was open air and in beautiful surroundings.
On our last day we took the airport bus back to Cairns and waved goodbye to Australia !
Quicksilver - silver sonic boat was excellent, good equipment, good crew and good lunch !
