Sydney, well what can you say everyone knows about the harbour bridge and the opera house, as they are world reknown buildings !
We were staying with a couple we met in Ecuador and we made our way to their place in Darling Harbour. Patrick and Caroline have an apartment in the Goldsborough building and it is very close to city centre. P&C were away but had left a key for us. We had a look around Darling Harbour and after a bite to eat we were very tired so went back for a snooze.
In the evening P&C came back and we all went out for a meal at the local pub.
While in Sydney we walked around the various areas of the city including Darling Harbour, the rocks, the Quay and a walk over the harbour bridge. We took a bus out to Bondi beach which is a great city beach and did some sunbathing before having lunch there. It is a lovely beach but doesnt compare to copacabana !
We took a day tour out to the blue mountains. Unfortunately the weather was not too good and the views were all obscured by mist ! We managed to see one of the three sister rock formation ! and we took in Scenic world where we walked down a thousand stairs and then around some boardwalks in the trees. We took the worlds steepest railway back to the top, at points it has an inclination of 52% ! On our way back we stopped at the olympic park and had a look at all the stadiums. It is an incredible place ! We took the ferry back from the olympic park to circular quay which took us under the harbour bridge and gave us great views of the opera house. We ate italian in the Rocks and had a drink in a bar.
We went on the Hunter Valley wine tour. It takes a few hours to get there but it is definately worth the trip. Every winery we visited had loads of different wines and port to taste and we racked up forty five tastings by the end of the day !!!! We also had a lovely lunch at one of the vineyards and had tastings of chocolate and cheese. We were quite tipsy by the end of the day, but in the same evening we took P&C out for dinner and Monica and Caroline consumed a few more bottles of wine. We then headed over to Star City, a huge Casino complex. Monica and Caroline had a few drinks while Nick and Patrick hit the roullete table. After a few setbacks N&P both made $100 !
On the weekend we had tickets to the 2nd day of the cricket, Australia vs World XI. We got to see the tail end of the Australians batting and then the whole of the World XI bat, as they slowly collapsed during the day. There was a lot of drinking a lot of banter between the English and the Aussie fans. Also some fighting around the ground and a streaker on the pitch for quite a while ! Everyone was building big beer glass stacks, and the police were removing people from the ground who threw these. The police would get booed and soaked with beer and plastic glasses as they dragged someone out !!
We left the cricket early and had a drink in Sydney before heading to the Telstra stadium at Olympic park for the rugby league tri-nations game between Aus and NZ. There were nearly 30,000 people there but the stadium can hold 83,000 ! It was a great game and NZ won. It was the first time in 14yrs that the Aussies have been beaten on their home soil ! It was a great day of sport and even Monica enjoyed the day !!!!
On the Sunday we headed over to see Simon and Caroline. Nick used to go to school with Simon and he moved over to Sydney a while ago. They had cooked us a wonderful lunch and we got to meet there little baby Marcus as well. On Sunday night we ordered pizza in the Patrick and Caroline and chatted to them.
On our last day in Sydney we did a bit of shopping and ate lunch out. We headed to the airport in the afternoon to catch our flight to Cairns.
