Today at noon I joined a group of people at the German Free School for conversation in German (Stammtisch). I was afraid that I would be totally lost because it has been so many years since I had studied that language; but I understood more than I had expected. Several of the people are from Germany but most of them are not.
I attended the conversation at the invitation of Karla Moyer, whom I had met at the DAR meeting earlier this week. She and her husband, Jeff, are both retired Air Force officers and had spent a number of years in Germany. Both speak German very well. They joined the group so they could maintain their fluency.
After the meeting I went to Central Market for lunch with Karla, Jeff and John, another member of the conversation group. Our conversation there was in English, though.
