We enjoyed an awesome driving tour though Carson City today, we were surprised to see how beautiful this area is. We stayed in the Reno area last year and missed touring Carson City, we were glad we did the drive today. Carson City was named after frontier explorer Kit Carson in 1858. Carson City is the state capital of Nevada. The majority of the population of the town lives in Eagle Valley, on the eastern edge of the Carson Range, a branch of the Sierra Nevada, about 30 miles south of Reno.
The town originated as a stopover for California bound emigrants, but developed into a city with the Comstock Lode, because of the silver strike in the mountains to the northeast. The city has served as the capital of Nevada since statehood in 1864. Much of its history was a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the tracks were removed in the 1950s.
After our tour of Carson City, we drove through a few more awesome towns on the way to Virginia City. I will have to separate today’s drive into several updates, I took over three hundred pictures in the area. :-) This area is packed with history, we enjoyed seeing all the old historic building and hope you enjoy the pictures too. Check back later for more from Nevada.
