Driving thru Painted Dessert Hwy 89 north of Flagstaff

Parked on Hwy 89 on Navajo reservations near Utah

Another view from 89.

Horseshoe Bend near Page, AZ

View of mountains from Horseshoe Bend

This is about our drive from Williams, AZ to Kanab, UT on Friday, 3/30.

Our plans were to drive back to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and make our way around to the north rim then out to Horseshoe Bend and on to Kanab. Those plans changed after we checked the route on google maps which indicated almost an hour delay due to the heavy traffic near the canyon. We backtracked to Flagstaff and took hwy 89 north. So glad we did!! It took us thru the western side of the Painted Dessert which was much more dynamic and colorful than what we saw while in the Petrified Forest. We passed through the huge Hopi and Navajo reservations also. They had some awesome scenery but was sad to see some of living conditions they have to endure.

Just south of Page, AZ we stopped to check out Horseshoe Bend. It is a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River below the Glen Canyon dam. It is a 1.5 mile hike roundtrip to enjoy the view. Ther was construction underway to improve the railing and safety at the edge. There is a 1000 ft drop from edge down to the river!! As of now there are no protection to keep you from going over the edge... Several people were going right up to the edge to have a Kodak moment???!! Could have been their last. Anyway, it was cool to see. On to Kanab.
