We are really doing this!!

|We are really doing this! It was a great day full of a little bit of everything low clouds, high clouds, sun, warm, cold and RAIN!!
But it was all good. Said good-bye to our quaint City Center Motel in Seaside sort of early this morning. Fueled up with our favorite Egg McMuffin at McD's, always a great way to start the day! It was chilly but we had our bright green rain jackets on, warm merino wool layers and bicycle lights flashing . . . We were ready! As we ate breakfast we could see the rain settling into the hills that we were headed towards. We expected rain so we took our time over breakfast and watched the rain settle in more than we had hoped. We set off and timing seemed to be on our side and perfect! We must have been just behind the rain cloud as it passed over, we rode on wet pavement but not in the rain! The dripping trees made it almost feel like rain, but it was all good!
We anticipated rain and of course we anticipated the elevation gains that were so "pointedly" illustrated on our maps! I say pointed because the lines went straight up and down! Much to our delight, it was all very do-able! We had no problems with them at all, in fact we both agree if all of our hills are that do-able It would be sweet!
But they wont be so we just enjoyed the day and what we had!
We had to pass thru a tunnel, I don't like them but just as we saw in Washington on our last trip there is a warning light that flashes for bicyclists. You just push a button like a cross walk and in you go! But you can't screw around, you really have to hustle! The noise inside is deafening as cars also enter. The lights were still flashing when we got to the other end which I thought was rather great that they give you enough time to make it thru . . . But then 2 young Canadian girls come happily pedaling out as if there was nothing to it! They just laughed and waved and pedaled on! We did finally catch up and chat with them and they said We just approached the exit as they pushed the button. So now we know, when entering a tunnel punch the button and PEDAL!! FAST!!
We really did thoroughly enjoy the day. Mind you we probably stopped almost every quarter mile for jackets on, jackets off, jackets on, jackets off . . . That kind of day with wind, sun, clouds and rain changing the temperature every 5 minutes but it probably helped make it an enjoyable day! We saw 3 other cyclists, the 2 Canadian girls riding from Cannon Beach to Coos Bay and then another guy from Quebec that is ridding back to Quebec.
One of our little stops was to chat with yet another lovely Canadian who was smiling and waving so we stopped and it was just a fun 30 minutes! Bree was just completing a 5 week trip by van and returning to Alberta to go back to work. She was a Wilderness guide! She shared her cinnamon bun with us! Such a sweet thing to do! Wanted to give us a treat and a bit of energy! It was delicious! Bree, if you are reading this thanks again! Your smile brought so much sunshine to our day!
We didn't have to go much further to reach the top of this climb and we were rewarded with the wonderful view down the coast looking at the next settlement of Manzanita. While we were enjoying the beach view, the group of people next to us pointed out the whales below just hanging out in the bay! It was so exciting, I have never seen a whale in the wild! Pretty cool! I even managed to zoom in with my phone for a photo and you can see the whale hanging out in the water! Not perfectly, but it works for me! I will never forget the sighting!
The rest of the afternoon was just down right pleasant. The sun was now out in full, the pavement dry which was good because we started on a long descent! When the pavement is wet, it is so dangerous and slick! We descended at quite a great rate, found a perfect lunch spot, had a rest and made a plan to go as far as Rockaway Beach.
We had already decided we were going to do another night in a motel, mainly because we are so close to the coast and honestly, its just cold at night! The next few days are supposed to warm up to normal warm temperatures, even near 80! Our plans worked out well for this evening not just because of the cold but because about 3 miles out of Rockaway Beach, the rain came down! Real rain, not just the passing showers like earlier in the day!
We rolled into the Sea Treasure Inn, and the owners were so thoughtful and helpful as we stood in their lobby dripping from everywhere but they weren't the least bit concerned that we would be a nuisance! They went out of their way to make us comfortable! The lobby has Starbucks Coffee!!!
To sum it all up we had a great day! Very encouraging that we are going to be just fine! We just need to get into a routine, and that will come with a bit more time and practice, especially when we can camp more!
Ready to call it a night!
