We pulled into port in Dunedin, pronounced doo-nee-den, New Zealand about 9 am this morning. We were sharing the port with Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Sea. Soon everyone was off on their individual shore excursions. Dunedin spreads out over the hills at the head of one of the country's loveliest harbors - a Kiwi city with Scottish heart. Proud of its heritage, a statue of Robert Burns overlooks the downtown activity and the country's only kiltmaker, whiskey distillery and bagpipe bands keeps the ties with Scotland alive. Known as the "Edinburgh of the South", Dunedin is gracious and dignified. To this day it retains its Scottish flavor and character. Jean, Tommy, Carmaleta, and Vernon visited the Cadbury chocolate factory, while Beverly and Gene visited the historic goldfields. Joella, Jan, Vadarae, and Erlene took a trip on the Taieri Gorge train and toured the Larnach Castle, while Kathie, Kellie, Dale, Sandy, and Cecilia traveled on 4wd mules over the rugged countryside terrain viewing endangered penguins. Everyone had a very tiring, but enjoyable day. We were treated to bagpipers and Amazing Grace as the ship left the port.
