First Snowbird Adventure - Winter 2008 travel blog

1st snow capped mountain going north

Some of the wind turbines

The Sands site 329

We woke up to a hazy cool morning; it must be time to leave. It was a good drive to Desert Hot Springs. Soon after we started, we drove the beginning of the I-15 highway...in only about 2 weeks, we will get to the other end of the I-15, at Sweetgrass, Montana. The winter snowbird adventure's end is in sight...in the distance, but in sight! But back to the drive, it took an hour to get out of the coastal haze and then we were in blue sky and it was getting hotter as we drove inland.

There were huge numbers (current estimate is between 500 and 1000) of wind turbines just west of Palm Springs. This area is called the Banning Pass between the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountains and the motor home bounced around quite a bit in the wind. After stopping briefly for lunch, we arrived at Sands RV & Golf Resort around 2pm with the temperature running around 78F. Our site faces one of the dog runs, which are actually huge natural trails between the cul de sacs in the park. The sites are large with shrubs on both sides, so we have lots of privacy. It's supposed to be stinkin' hot all week, Elaine's last chance to get that tan in.

We went for a walk in the late afternoon. Nice facilities with a pool and hot tub, games room with pool tables, card tables and a dart board. The golf course is perhaps the best condition of all of the courses we've seen on this trip. People are commenting that they got more rain than usual this winter and the valley is greener and with more flowers than normal. We got a golf tee time for 1:00pm on Monday, and will visit the driving range before then.
