San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Continued through the night, a total of 17 or so hours and arrived in San Pedro de Atacama, seemingly in the middle of the desert, at around 11:30am. We then were transferred to our hotel and because our rooms were not ready, we went out on a familiarisation walk of the town with our tour leader. It is a very dusty basic town with low one storey buildings and many tour agencies offering trips to surrounding areas and restaurants to cater for the many tourists that visit this area to see the desert attractions. We had lunch and then went back to our hotel and checked into our room. At about 3:30pm, we were picked up in a mini bus and went on a tour to the Valley of Death and the Valley of the Moon, about 4 km from San Pedro. It is an area where the rock surfaces are reminiscent of the moon and there are some very beautiful distant views of volcanoes and mountains in the distance. We looked at all the various lookouts and then we headed up to the viewpoint to see the sunset, where we took a few photos. We then headed back to the hotel. By the time we arrived back, the temperature had dropped to about 10C from over 20C, so we had an aperitif in our room ( in our coats and hats) and then decided not to go out for dinner (as we had enjoyed a good lunch). Then into bed to get warm and to sleep around 10:00pm in the freezing cold. Not even a heater in this room!

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Up late today to allow the day to heat up somewhat and had breakfast in the sunny courtyard and sat around chatting in the very warm daytime sun until about 1:00pm. We then walked up the street and had a yummy ice cream and walked to the end of the street to the edge of town and took some photos of the views. We then came back and had some lunch (hot chips) in the square in the still warm sunshine, then slowly walked back looking at tourist and craft shops on the way. Back to the hotel room for an aperitif in our coats - by now the inside temperature had dropped to 14C. Lynn devised a plan to be warmer going to bed - she got dressed into her 'freezing weather' pyjamas (aka thick socks, tracksuit pants, singlet top, and long sleeved top), then added her 'going out' clothes (aka shoes, warm trousers with a sweater, coat, hat, gloves). Out to dinner to a warm restaurant and home to our cold hotel room at about 10:00pm. At this point Lynn removed her outer clothing and hopped into bed with her 'freezing weather' pyjamas - which were already warm!

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Up late again for breakfast in the courtyard, but not as warm and sunny today. We sat around chatting for a couple of hours and then went out for a walk from the town out to Death Valley about 4km away. The rock formations are quite beautiful. We tried to find a high point to see the outside view without success, but sat in a very quiet spot for about half an hour or so. We then walked back to the town and then bought some snacks for our trip to the Bolivian Salar de Uyuni tomorrow, had an ice cream and then sat outside and read for a while but it became too cold to sit outside so we then sat in our room and had an aperitif. Dinner tonight in a restaurant in town. Today was quite cool as it was mostly overcast.
