Our RV trip around Atlantic Canada 2009 travel blog

Our first sighting of a mounted....

Eastport USA

On reaching Lamberts Cove a quick blast of throttle gets us off the ferry and up the slipway. The general flow of traffic is straight down the road, either they are heading to Campobello Island or across the Eastport, America. We head right and go looking for beaches. This side of the Island is sheltered from the sea and on the smaller Islands there were good looking beaches to be found. As we drive around we see lots of deep coves which contain more of the fishing traps. As we drive around there is a distinct lack of beaches. All the coves here are rough rock covered in stinky seaweed or have been converted into harbours for the boats.

We drive down to the ferry port at the other end of the island before heading back up the other side. Here I spot our first “Mounty”

actually mounted and not in a car.

As we take a photo we can then see with the zoom that he is actually a customs officer. We must keep looking for the elusive “Mounty”.

As we drive around the other side of the island the same story is true. No good beaches. Lots of harbours, most with boats sitting on the land waiting for the tide to come back in. We stop for an ice cream before heading off the Island. As the tide is out we decide to try and get down to St. Martins again as last time the tide was in and it was pouring with rain.

As we travel back across to the mainland we spot Eastport U.S.A. across the water.
