Wanderings and Side Trips travel blog

Welcome

There are three rows of campsites out there past the trees, under...

Our first campsite

This is much better

A long pontoon bridge to the marina

A friendly crane

And several friendly geese

Guess we won't be filling up here

Our campsite on the second day

Water is slowly dropping. See the high water mark

We arrived Sunday afternoon after a pleasant trip of about 150 miles. We could get used to this type of traveling :-) There was water everywhere!! We crossed the Arkansas River on the way and it was almost up to the bottom of the bridge. When we drove up to the entrance to the campground, we were told they were flooded. They have 122 campsites here and there were only 16 on dry ground. Evidently Tenkiller Lake is the third reservoir for Tulsa and the other two have been letting water out to reduce their levels. Tenkiller can only let the water out slowly so it won't destroy the trout fishing downstream. It is 20 feet above flood level right now. We took one of the three electric sites open. We dumped our tanks outside the park and had to take on water there also. We set up amid many problems. Our electric didn't work and Wes couldn't get a satellite signal for internet. We did have TV, but no internet. The camp hosts were great, willing to do whatever we needed to get set up. They seemed surprised that we would stay. But hey - we had paid reservations and I know how impossible it is to get a refund from the government. Besides it was a little late in the day to look for another place to stay. And - as Wes pointed out - "we are in this for the adventure". So, we boondocked for the night.

This morning Wes checked out the other available campsites and found the electric worked and he could get a good satellite signal on a large tent site. So, we moved over there and set up - again :-) Now we are comfortable and happy. We took a long walk around the campground and the neighborhood. We have determined that this must be a beautiful place when the water level is normal. So, we plan to return again in the future. We walked down to the space we had reserved and it is out of the water, but the electric connections etc. are underwater. The original site I wanted to reserve was waaaaay underwater.

We will be here for a few days. There is only one other RV here besides us and the camp host. It's almost like a private campground just for us.
