June 6 Day 8 to Shegar. 76 ks, over Lakpa La pass 5220m (17060ft), the highest we will climb. 5:50 ride time. A challenging day over the highest pass. 23k to climb 1200m !!!! Gradient fairly steep, and the chilling wind was brutal. Nickie did a slow speed fall onto her back from her bike on a steep part , chain jammed as she tried to change to 1:1 gear, no damage done. Had to have lots of stops to drink and get the heart rate down. Oxygen is at about 63% compared to sea level. About 2 ks from the top, Nickie experienced blurred vision, burning, weepy eyes and dizziness, rapid heart rate. Couldn’t focus well enough to cycle safely and to walk was too slow,(about 3 kph) wind chill factor was probably a few degrees below zero. Reluctantly she rode in the van to the top. Pete arrived about 15 mins later. At the top, had a snack and rested out of the wind. Nickie felt OK to make descent to lunch stop about 13ks on. Some very rough patches of roadworks. Got first glimpse of Everest. Gentle up and down 40k descent to Shegar, very enjoyable riding with a little head wind and temps now mid- 20s. Hotel accommodation tonight, did all our hand washing and bliss to shower properly. Enjoyed a Chinese buffet. Pete put MTB tyres onto Nickies bike, have some off road tomorrow, riding toward Everest Base Camp. Craigs birthday, 51 .
