History of the "River House"

The Suwannee River has a unique history. White Sulphur Springs, located on the banks of the river dating back to at least the 1700's. The Indians reguarded the springs as sacred ground for it's curative powers. White Sulphur Springs was promoted as a health resort & the spring water advertised as a cure for almost any ailment. In 1906 the spring was enclosed with a high concrete wall & gates to keep the river out. Buildings on either side of the spring contain that of shops, dressing rooms & clinical examination rooms. One of the resort's many famous visitors was Teddy Roosevelt. The spring house attracted visitors into the 1950's. Today only the original concrete wall & gate still exist.
