And the vacation has begun! It is always exciting for us in the months and days leading up to a trip like this - lots of planning, researching, reading, studying....trying to figure out where we will go, what we will see. This trip we have the pleasure of joining our friend Maria who is originally from Spain but now lives in Birmingham and works with me at BBVA Compass. Every year or so, she visits family in San Fernando in the south of Spain and she asked us if we would like to tag along this year - heck yeah! So, we booked our plane tickets last August but were not able to get on the same plane as Maria. We planned to meet in Madrid at the airport, but ended up at the last minute deciding to meet at the train station - long story, boring to anybody but us (involves mechanical problems on the plane leaving Birmingham and a super tight connection in Charlotte, NC). Everything turned out well though, and we made all our plane connections, retrieved our luggage in Madrid, and met Maria at the train station with 20 minutes to spare! As I write this, we are on the Renfe train headed to San Fernando - first class, 4 hour train ride from Madrid. After sitting in close quarters on 3 different planes, first class on the train is very welcome!
I am posting a few pictures that I took with my cell phone - not many opportunities to get out the big camera yet. Plus I am a bit bleary eyed from lack of sleep so all my pictures would probably be out of focus anyway. Plenty of time for real vacation pictures once we make it to Maria's sister's house.
At this point, we plan to stay in San Fernando for two days, visiting with Maria's family and letting them show us some of their favorite local spots. Then Steve and I will head off on our own for a week, visiting all sorts of places along the coast and then we'll head inland to Seville for two days. Then we will head back to San Fernando for a couple more days to visit with Maria and her family again before heading back to Madrid and then the long trip home.....but I am not going to think about that right now!
