Day 3 began as we boarded our motorcoach for the short trip to Alexandria, Virginia. Our first stop was the National Masonic Temple. We were treated to a guided tour which took us all the way to the top of the Temple tower. We learned all about the early masons, of which George Washington and several other early leaders were a part of. The top of the tower offered great panoramic views of Alexandria, Washington DC, and surrounding countryside. Next, we were off for a driving tour of historic Alexandria. Many of the buildings and dwellings of the 1700's and earlier are still standing and in use today. Our tour of Alexandria was capped off with a lunch at Gadsby's Tavern. The Tavern was a favorite haunt of George Washington, and he stood outside on the stoop, giving one of his last public addresses. After lunch, we set out for Mount Vernon, George and Martha Washington's home on the Potomac River. We toured the house and grounds, which offered some amazing views, and visited the family tomb where the couple rests. The house itself is completely restored as it was when the Washingtons were living, with many of the furnishings still being original. Once again on the motorcoach, everyone settled back to nap, read, or enjoy the Virginia scenery as we made the 2 hour trip down to Williamsburg. After checking into our hotel, everyone was free for dinner and got a good night's sleep to rest up for tomorrow!
