The Champagne Backpacker: Michael's Round the World Trip 2005-2007-- The Adventure of a Lifetime

Michael travel blog
In May 2007, I returned home to the United States after a two year around the world trip which took me to all seven continents and 35 countries. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime. I have so many wonderful memories of the great people that I met and the fabulous places that I visited. I hope my travels inspire you to do the same--To explore this amazing planet and experience firsthand its diverse peoples, incredible cultures, fantastic food and drink, awesome outdoors, and amazing wildlife. I am privileged and humbled to have had such a wonderful, unforgettable experience.

The links below detail my entire round the world journey from the very beginning in Istanbul, Turkey, to its pièce de résistance finale in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Some of the highlights in between include: Sailing the Greek Islands with friends from New York; Wandering in the footsteps of Jesus and Mohammad in Jerusalem, Israel; Scuba diving the Red Sea, Egypt; Exploring the pyramids of Giza, Egypt; Tracking and spotting the Big-Five game (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) on safari in the Masai Mara, Kenya; Visiting the home of the mountain gorillas of Uganda; Flying over Victoria Falls in a microlight, Zambia; Christmas shopping in Rome and Paris; Attending a teach-in with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India; Exploring the temples of Bagan, Myanmar; Soaking up the Hindu culture of Bali, Indonesia; Horseback riding in Mongolia; Hiking the Great Wall of China; Trekking the jungles of northern Laos; Eating in Bangkok, Thailand; Counting penguins in Antarctica; Hiking the W-Trek in Torre del Paine, Patagonia, Chile; Eyeing the enigmatic Moai on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile; Journeying through the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia; Cycling Down the World's Most Dangerous Road, La Paz, Bolivia; Following in the footsteps of the Inca on the trail to Machu Picchu, Peru; Partying at Carnaval in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil; and Ecotouring Mamiraua Sustainable Development Reserve, the Amazon, Brazil.

To browse my travels, click on the map or country/region name link below and then the point of interest. I'm more than happy to answer any questions about my travels--just drop me an email at the address below.

As a frequent sailor who started and ended my travels on a boat, I leave you with a quote from the American author Mark Twain--"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Warmest Aloha!
Michael
