To Halifax and Back With a Dog - 48 contiguous states in 2010

Once upon a time, gosh! over a half century ago, I discovered TRAVEL. Brownie (lower left) and I (girl on stump) joined my parents on a wondrous trip to the Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, Banff & Lake Louise. Mom & Dad slept in the teardrop while Brownie & I bedded down on an air mattress atop a slab door which rested on what was once the back seat of the car. The bottom half of that "bed" protruded into the trunk. Having tent camped previously, this was a big step up in comfort & I was quite happy in my odd sleeping quarters. I also had the questionable advantage of being greeted by the sunrise every morning through the rear window. One morning I awoke to the Grand Teton peak framed in that window. Awesome. Maybe I was born with the travel gene or perhaps this memorable trip gave rise to my passion, but either way, after moose, glaciers, mud pots & Jackson Hole, I was hooked.

Feeding that wanderlust, I've had the good fortune of traveling to many countries, on various modes of transportation (gosh...plane, ship, bus, raft, dog sled, train, dugout canoe, horse...) and enjoying unforgettable adventures over the decades. Since the turn of the century, however, I've simply been dreaming, planning and preparing for my "Freedom" years.

I picked up my new 34' NuWa HitchHiker 5th wheel in June 2007 and followed my friends, Jo and Wayne, from Caldwell, Idaho back to California. They were my security blanket and when they turned off (as planned) on Donner Pass to head to their cabin, I surprised myself and burst into tears! I was sooooo ALONE! But my 5th wheel and I made it to my son's and the success of that trip was an upper and confidence booster beyond words. However... I still needed a truck (I had borrowed my son's for the 800 mile maiden journey).

In April, 2008, I purchased a 2005 Chevy 1-ton diesel 4x4 crew cab long bed dually (phew) from a friend on our NuWaOwners.org on the Internet. And to celebrate the fact that I could actually now pull my 5th wheel, I took a 3 week vacation to Oregon, Idaho and Nevada. I stopped by Crater Lake en route to Eugene, but my day on the campus...the game on Autzen field...retracing my old well-trodden paths...was the highlight of the trip. Close was meeting one of our forum administrators and his wife in Corvallis and more forum members at three different stops. I parked in front of Gail and Bill's (lifelong friends) home in Reno, and my pals, Caryn and Judy, were my guests in Bridgeport. What fun this is!

In 2009 I took two big steps. The first one was retiring before I planned, but my truck's California license plate (8R52909) called out to me loud and clear. The 8 = my lucky number. R = retirement...so I arranged to make May 29, 2009 my first day of freedom and two days later I took off on a real-get-my-feet-wet road trip. I pulled my HitchHiker 49 days, 5500 miles, co-hosted a Forum rally (82 folks at the Geezers & Geysers Rally in Yellowstone) and traveled through California's high desert country, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. No dents. No scratches. It was a beautiful, spectacular, memorable trip that I will cherish forever. I met my friends, Jo and Sharon, on the Madeline Plains, saw a bald eagle in Yellowstone, fly fished the Madison River!, parked in front of Gail and Bill's house in Reno again, visited with Kathie & Dave... and was touched by a wild horse! Really! THAT was a perfect trip!

Now, it's time for the Really Big One - the one I've dreamt about for ten years. I leave March 13, 2010, & hope to return no earlier than October 16. My plan is to visit 48 states (Alaska is in the future & I've decided not to drive to Hawaii). I'm calling the trip: To Halifax and Back and I hope y'all will enjoy the ride with me.
