Motorcycle Expedition to Alaska 2007 |
|
Exploring Alaska is a trip I had always wanted to take "sometime" but kept puting it off. The time finally arrived and I started the trip May 21, 2007.
I can't think of a better way to explore Alaska than by motorcycle via backroads. The total distance I covered was 13,400 KM, roughly 8,000 KM on non-paved highways, gravel roads and forestry backroads.
The northern terminus of the trip was Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on the Arctic Ocean. The road to Prudhoe Bay is roughly 800 KM on the mainly gravel haul road built to service the Alaska Pipeline. This is the farthest north you can travel by road in North America, roughly 400 km north of the Arctic Circle.
I also dipped a toe in the Pacific Ocean at Tofino, BC on Vancouver Island before heading home through BC and Washington State.
The trip was everything I hopped it would be and much more.

The next "leg" of our ongoing journey was to dip a toe in the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Janine and I headed east July 16, 2007. This trip is recorded in a seperate journal. Click here to view our "Exploring Canadian Backroads Coast to Coast" trip journal.
